Spotlight on Sonia Mogford-Abbot

Art for me is an exploratory and educational process in which I not only learn more about my subject but about myself too. I love to make art that evokes a feeling in me and in those that gaze upon it.

I am an artist working in acrylics and this is my first year taking part in the Devon Open Studios and I am excited to being doing so.

I was born in Devon and live in the Blackdown Hills which is an area of outstanding natural beauty. With the coast only half an hour from my home, I am spoilt for choice for inspiration and can often be found in either of these places with a sketch book or camera gathering images and ideas to work with.

Both the coast and the countryside frequently find their way into my art and are incorporated into a collection entitled ‘Journey to Me’ which will also be on display in September. Nature in all its glory is shown alongside a woman. It is an 18-piece visual representation of a journey from a place of bewilderment and limitation to one of freedom and joy. Most paintings in this collection do not show the woman’s face but do all tell a tale. Each painting represents an emotion that every human will undoubtedly feel at some point in their life.

My studio is in my conservatory, but I can also at times be found sitting with my legs dangling out of the back of my campervan sketching or painting whilst exploring more of our beautiful county. My art can be found in homes and businesses across the UK and Europe.

I am very much looking forward to welcoming you into my home in September. I’m at venue 39 in East Devon.,
