We are Reg and Emma Allan, a husband and wife team who specialise in making hand mulled watercolour paints. We hope to reintroduce artists to the quality, craftsmanship and care that goes into the traditional paint making process. Our studio is in our home which is full of art work in a range of styles by friends and ourselves.
We have been making watercolour paints for eighteen months and the journey has been an all-absorbing and fascinating one in which we have learnt so much. From discovering historical pigments to realising the exciting potential that we can make entirely new colours by combining pigments.
The watercolours we create start with the concept of a palette and from there we research and experiment to select the pigments we will use. We consider how the colours mix together and how they will complement each other. We make the paint by mulling pigment and binder together using the traditional method and tools of a hand held glass muller over a glass slab. It is labour intensive, but this hands-on approach means we can mull each pigment according to its unique characteristics while ensuring the pigment and binder are evenly blended.
During the open studios we will be sharing our knowledge and demonstrating the craft of hand mulled watercolour paints on Saturday and Sunday afternoons between 2 – 3 pm. If you are interested in booking a place, please contact us via the links below. Otherwise pop along to try out some extra special paints! We look forward to welcoming you.
